Cleaning False Teeth

Having false teeth can rise up many questions that need answering. It is a misbelief that because dentures are made from a synthetic material they don’t need as much attention as regular teeth. Actually dentures often promote the spread of bacteria and fungus in the mouth which can lead to yeast infection and other problems. People who have false teeth have a higher risk of getting a periodontal disease. This is why cleaning false teeth properly is very important for maintaining a good oral hygiene.

As usually, you need to clean them twice a day. Just as natural teeth, dentures are covered with plaque which is a good place for bacteria to multiply and cause problems. Here are some tips on how to clean you dentures. First, you have to remove them. If you use an adhesive, this will be harder, try washing out your mouth with warm water, and keep it in there to loosen the adhesive. Be careful, don’t drop your denture in the sink, it will brake easily. After you got it out from your mouth there are two things you have to do. Scrub the denture with some kind of cleaning product, like toothpaste. You can use home-made remedies for this like baking soda or salt. Scrubbing will remove debris and tartar. After scrubbing you have to soak the denture into a disinfectant. This is very important, bacteria stick to the surface of dentures and multiply.

There are many teeth whitening products that you can buy, however, some home made teeth remedies are quite effective. You can soak the denture in vinegar. It won’t kill all the bacteria, but it removes tartar. Be careful, vinegar will damage dentures with metallic parts. Some kind of bleach, such as Clorox will also disinfect false teeth. Remember, you have to dilute it! Mix the bleach with water. If the solution is too strong it might change the colour of your dentures. Effervescent cleansers are also used for cleaning false teethYou can use peppermint or spearmint teas for a mouthwash, or salty water.  The most efficient way to disinfect your dentures is by small ultrasonic cleaners. They cost a couple of hundred dollars, but they are very effective.

Don’t forget to ask your dentist before you decide to buy any of the dental products or before you try home-remedies. There are many types of false teeth, some cleaners might be good and others not.
